Hi, I am glad you found us. Welcome!
Let’s start with an opening question. When will Larchitecture* live up to inclusivity, diversity and centering marginalised voices?
Every description, every project, every podcast…starts with working towards an inclusive practice. But where are the Queer* Larchitects*?
Queerscapes is born out of my love for landscape architecture, and my despair as a trans queer young professional.
I created Queerscapes because I didn’t see myself represented in the industry.. The best I could do as a Landscape Architecture student, was to google “queer landscape”. Even then, the people and events I found didn't represent me. I felt like LGBTQ+ architectural spaces and events I entered perpetuated existing social hierarchies, which catered to the more palatable LGBTQ+ demographic.
Queerscapes is creating a space that is critical of rainbow-washing and non-eqitable and non-inclusive practices perpetuated in the fields of larchitecture*. It is a space run by me, a queer* trans* person. Queerscapes will forever be by us, and for us.
The first aim of Queerscapes is to bring together people who work, research, study or are otherwise involved in the design of the human environment. Queerscapes can explore relationships of larchitecture* (design fields like and not limited to architecture, landscape architecture, public space design, urbanism, furniture design, interior design, etc) to queerness. I want to create representation in the field, which can help to bring more Queer* people to the field. As well as a reason to keep pushing for LGBTGIA+ rights within the industry.
If you’re a student, recent graduate, or have worked in the industry for years and this resonates with you, welcome.
Meaningful change will not come from existing practices built on patriarchal structures and unjust hierarchies. We have to build our own, dismantle, re-design and rebuild. And this time, let’s design beyond the rainbow.
Till next time,
Queerscapes founder
